The truth is, designing in Charleston requires more than a good eye. It requires intention, restraint, and a knowledge of how materials perform over time. True luxury isn’t just how a space looks on installation day-it’s how it lives.
Embracing Natural Light. Intentionally.
Coastal homes are defined by their light, but without a thoughtful design, that light can quickly become harsh and unforgiving. We love to use layered window treatments to ensure we aren’t blocking light, but we are embracing it. A thin layer (think: linen curtains) and a light blocking layer (like a shade) allow you to control the light throughout the day and night. Finishes can also play beautifully off of the light. Some of our favorites in the Charleston climate are grass cloth, matte paint finishes, and leathered stone countertops. Think less
glare, and more glow.
Designing for Humidity without Compromise
Charleston humidity can be a beast. And it doesn’t just exist in summertime, it’s a year round consideration for Charleston homes. Humidity can cause warping, swelling, and premature aging of materials. A good interior designer should be able to guide you in how to care for your finishes in order to help them stand the test of time. For example, solid wood furniture should be carefully sourced and sealed. Performance fabrics aren’t just a luxury, they are a necessity! We love to use finishes like roman clay and unlacquered brass that, white beautiful, will age gracefully and tell a story over time.
Salt Air and Elevated Materials
In coastal design, salt air cannot be underestimated. Our job is to find finishes that demonstrate resilience. Aged metal finishes often perform better than polished finishes. Natural stones must be properly sealed, but can offer a timeless appeal. Every detail matters from cabinet hardware to plumbing fixtures to doorknobs. We want to ensure your home is as refined years down the road as it is on installation day.
